F15-19 Half Marathon: Ganzenhuber dominates a local showdown in Fresno

• Julia Ganzenhuber, 16, wins in 1:46:41 — an 8:08/mi average that put more than nine minutes of daylight between her and runner-up Molly Palacios (1:55:58).
• Biggest mover: Palacios rocketed from 240th among women at the 1-mile mark all the way to 70th by the finish — the most dramatic climb in the F15-19 field.
• Arabella Esparza surged the back half, posting the 141st-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish segment and climbing from 256th among women early on to 155th at the line, finishing 4th in 2:07:59.
• Eleven finishers completed the F15-19 race, ranging from Ganzenhuber's 1:46:41 to Leslie Manzano's 3:05:38.

Julia Ganzenhuber, just 16 years old and racing in her hometown of Fresno, was never seriously threatened. She moved from 30th among women at the mile to 26th by the 10K and held that position to the tape — a sign of a controlled, confident effort rather than a frantic charge. Her 29th-fastest women's split on the opening 1-mile-to-10K segment set the tone early, and her 8:08/mi average was in a class of its own in the F15-19 field.

The race for second was where the real drama unfolded. Molly Palacios, 17, was buried in 240th among women through the first mile but unleashed a furious second half, vaulting all the way to 70th by the finish and claiming second in 1:55:58. Jadyn Machado, also 17, ran a similarly aggressive early segment — posting the 81st-fastest women's split from 1 mile to 10K — and held on for third in 2:00:04, finishing just over four minutes behind Palacios.

Esparza and Ava Mattos (5th, 2:09:48) rounded out the top five, both making their moves on the second half of the course. Esparza's back-half charge was the sharper of the two — she gained more than 100 places among women from the opening mile to the finish, while Mattos ran a more measured race that saw her position fluctuate only modestly. Laura McCoy (6th, 2:19:29) and Ariana Gil Mendoza (7th, 2:19:54) were separated by just 25 seconds at the line, with the remaining four finishers — Alina Daniela Luis (8th, 2:32:03), Amya Howard (9th, 2:33:49), Katelyn Januse (10th, 2:36:59), and Leslie Manzano (11th, 3:05:38) — completing the field.
