M40-44: Patananan Dominates in Fresno with a 1:17:43

Justin Patananan, 44, from Porterville, put on a masterclass at the Two Cities Marathon Half, winning the M40-44 group in 1:17:43 at a 5:56/mi clip. He went out near the front of the men's field and held his ground, finishing 4th among all men — a remarkable effort at the top end of the age group. His 1M→10K split ranked 4th among all men in the field, a sign that the race was largely won in the first half.

Behind him, the real drama unfolded in the chase. Gregory Flitsanov (1:19:45, 6:05/mi) was buried in 19th among the men at the 10K mark, but he came roaring back through the second half, eventually finishing 6th among all men and 2nd in M40-44. Jake Bergen (1:21:08, 6:11/mi) ran a similar story — 16th at the 10K, 9th at the finish — making the final stretch a genuine two-man battle for the runner-up spot. Flitsanov held him off by 1:23, but both men ran the 10K→Finish leg faster than anyone else in the top three.

Pedro Magana (4th, 1:28:19), Dan McCoy (5th, 1:28:47), and Roel Villarreal (6th, 1:28:54) were separated by just 35 seconds, while Ever Merida (7th, 1:29:34), Bernardo Salcido (8th, 1:29:52), Juan Gopar (9th, 1:30:57), and Julio Rodriguez (10th, 1:31:18) kept the group remarkably compact. In an 87-finisher M40-44 field, that kind of density in the middle of the pack made for compelling racing well beyond the podium.
