Alejandra Baglietto and Teri Barrett ran what amounted to a two-woman race within the race. Both Visalia's Baglietto and Clovis's Barrett were sitting outside the top 15 among women at the one-mile mark, and both unleashed closing halves that rocketed them to the front of the Masters Women field. When the dust settled, two seconds — two seconds across 6.2 miles — separated them. Barrett's 7th-fastest closing split was extraordinary; Baglietto's 6th-fastest was just a sliver better, and that sliver was everything.

Behind that duel, Patricia Cruz ran a quietly brilliant race of her own. The Fresno local was 41st among women at the mile mark and finished 9th, a climb of 32 places fueled by the 12th-fastest closing split in the entire women's field.
