Owen Hunt made this one look easy. The 14-year-old from Fresno opened up a gap that only grew as the race went on, finishing in 39:15 at a 6:19-per-mile clip — a pace none of the other nine finishers came close to matching. His surge through the men's field in the back half of the race, moving from 18th to 5th, shows the closing speed was real, not just a comfortable trot.

Behind him, the race for the podium was anything but settled. Vega and Gonzalez ran nearly identical races — both averaged 7:40 per mile — and only timing finer than the displayed second split them apart. Three seconds over 6.2 miles is about as close as it gets without calling it a tie, and Vega earned 2nd by just that sliver.

The youth contingent deserves a mention. G. Somoza (age 10) and A. Balch (age 8) both finished in the top five among the under-14 boys — Somoza in 54:58 and Balch in 1:00:15 — which is no small thing on a warm November morning in Fresno with temperatures at 74°F. The back of the field was tightly clustered too, with Carrasco, Romero, and Tiu all finishing within 51 seconds of each other between 1:13:55 and 1:14:46.
