Ten boys lined up for the M0-14 race on a warm November morning in Fresno — 74°F and clear skies — and Owen Hunt made it look like a different race entirely. The 14-year-old from Fresno clocked a 39:15 finish at a crisp 6:19/mi pace, good enough to move from 6th to 5th among all men on the final stretch and post the 9th-fastest men's closing split in the field. No one else in the age group was within eight minutes of him.

The real drama played out for the silver medal. J.J. Vega of Visalia came through in 47:36, but Ramon Gonzalez of Orange Cove was right on his heels at 47:39 — a three-second margin after 6.2 miles.
