The 42-year-old from Sanger ran a 5:35/mi average, never relinquished the men's lead, and crossed in 34:42 to take the age-group title by a comfortable 1:28 margin. For context, his pace was a full 14 seconds per mile faster than his nearest challenger.

Courtney Curtis, also 42, was equally unfazed by the heat. He ran a measured 5:49/mi from start to finish, holding 2nd among men throughout and finishing in 36:10 — a performance that left the rest of the M40-44 field well behind. The gap from Curtis to 3rd-place Quinn Zweigle (47:30) was over 11 minutes, a chasm that tells you just how dominant the top two were on this day.

The race for the remaining podium spots had its own drama.
