Two Cities Marathon 10K — F70-74: Mitchell runs away with it

• Rosa Mitchell won the F70-74 group in 1:18:34 (12:39/mi), finishing nearly 5:41 clear of second place.
• Roycelyn Griffin (2nd, 1:24:15) and Ofie Cruz (3rd, 1:25:44) were separated by just 1:29 at the finish.
• Maryjean Gilio (5th, 1:44:36) ran the stronger closing mile-to-finish split, posting the 425th-fastest women's split on that segment to overtake Lynnene Mello (4th, 1:47:22), who faded to the 452nd-fastest on the same stretch.

Rosa Mitchell made the F70-74 race look like a solo time trial. The 70-year-old from Kingsburg crossed in 1:18:34 at 12:39/mi, climbing from 316th to 292nd among all women on the final stretch with the 287th-fastest women's closing split — a commanding effort in 74°F Fresno heat. No one in the group came close to her pace.

Behind Mitchell, the real drama was the battle for second. Roycelyn Griffin of Clovis finished in 1:24:15, but Ofie Cruz of Merced — three years her senior at 73 — gave her a genuine fight, crossing in 1:25:44. Cruz actually posted the 338th-fastest women's closing split to Griffin's 333rd, a marginal difference that kept the gap at just 1:29. Both women moved up through the women's field over the final segment, a credit to their pacing in the warm conditions.

The fifth-place story had its own twist. Maryjean Gilio of Fresno ran the final mile-to-finish segment in the 425th-fastest women's split, outpacing Lynnene Mello of Sanger, who faded to the 452nd-fastest on that same stretch. That surge was enough for Gilio to finish ahead, 1:44:36 to Mello's 1:47:22 — a gap of nearly three minutes carved out over the closing stretch. Five women in their seventies finishing a 10K on a warm November morning in Fresno: every one of them earned it.
