The 43-year-old from Fresno was already moving — her gender place jumped from 41st at the mile to 9th by the finish — and her 7:59/mi average held up as the fastest pace in the group by a significant margin. No one else in F40-44 broke 51 minutes, and the gap between Cruz and runner-up Marmolejo was nearly two full minutes.

Courtney Marmolejo of Madera made her own statement, surging from 35th among women at the mile all the way to 15th at the finish — the 17th-fastest women's closing split in the field — to claim a comfortable 2nd. Cheryl Aleman rounded out the podium in 54:12, though her closing split told a slightly different story: she slipped from 22nd among women to 26th over the final stretch, suggesting the Fresno heat may have taken a toll late.

The race for 4th was the afternoon's most entertaining subplot. Kelly Pataca turned in the most dramatic charge of any F40-44 finisher, hauling herself from 86th among women at the mile to 45th by the tape — a swing of 41 places. She edged Anna Simpson by just nine seconds (56:18 to 56:27), with Simpson's 44-year-old legs holding on gamely to the very end. Further back, Esmeralda Casillas and Heather Cliff were separated by just two seconds (1:00:20 and 1:00:22) in the battle for 9th and 10th, and Megan Arundell and Cassandra Henderson matched each other almost exactly at 1:01:42 and 1:01:44.
