M65-69: Graham Joyce Runs Away With It in Fresno Heat

With 74°F and clear skies over Fresno, the M65-69 group of eight faced a warm morning, and the results showed a field that spread out decisively. Graham Joyce, 67, from Fresno, was in command throughout — moving from 95th to 69th in the men's field as he ran a crisp 8:29/mi to finish in 52:44. No one in the group came close to testing him.

Vincent Marquez, also 67, made the trip down from Morro Bay and crossed in 58:03 (9:21/mi) for second. That's a notably different pace from Joyce's, and the gap widened over the course of the race — Marquez faded from 91st to 132nd in the men's field on the final segment, while Joyce was moving the other direction. Dan Evans rounded out the podium in 1:06:03, steadily climbing from 262nd to 214th among men over the final stretch.

The most eye-catching mid-race move belonged to Seshadri Ramaswami, who rocketed from 338th to 86th in the men's field — an enormous surge — yet his 54:22 finish placed him 4th in M65-69, just 1:38 behind Joyce. The top four were clearly separated from the back half of the field, where Robert Nakamura (1:32:54), Russ Ellis (1:35:02), Emmanuel Conanan (1:38:35), and Corey Simons (1:42:08) finished within about nine minutes of each other, all running in the 14–16 minute-per-mile range.
