Even when the field reshuffled through the middle miles — she briefly slipped to 4th at the 15K checkpoint — she reasserted herself and crossed in 1:16:12 at 5:49/mi to take the win.

Annie Wheating made the most compelling counter-argument. Running out of Longmont, CO, the 28-year-old owned the fastest women's split on the 15K–20K stretch and climbed back to 2nd, where she had been all along before that mid-race shuffle. Her 1:17:20 (5:54/mi) was a strong performance, but Stafford's early cushion proved decisive — the winning margin was 1:08.

The race's best late move belonged to Madeleine King. The Virginia Beach local was running 6th at the midpoint checkpoint but unleashed the fastest women's closing split of the day (20K to Finish) to climb three spots and land on the podium in 1:19:22 (6:03/mi). Emma Kumer was right behind her in 4th with the 2nd-fastest closing split (1:21:08, 6:11/mi), making the final miles the most competitive stretch of the race.
