Shamrock Half Marathon F70-74: Astrop Breaks the Tape in 2:00:44

• Cecil Astrop won the F70-74 race in 2:00:44 (9:13/mi), finishing nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Barbie Laughlin's 2:02:36.
• Astrop and Laughlin ran the race's two fastest splits in the 10K→15K segment among the F70-74 field, with Astrop posting the 545th-fastest women's split and Laughlin the 586th on that stretch.
• Third place Mary Fout (2:18:36) finished a full 16 minutes behind Laughlin — the widest gap between any two consecutive podium spots in the field.
• At the back of the 19-finisher field, Rebecca Ashley-Gearhart and Vicky Eisenhut crossed within 21 seconds of each other — 3:54:34 and 3:54:55 — to close out the race.

Cecil Astrop, 71, of Richmond made her intentions clear from the gun. She entered the women's field at 625th place at the 5K mark and steadily climbed, reaching 566th by 20K before a slight fade to 574th at the finish — a net gain of 51 women passed across the full race. Her 9:13/mi average on a humid 55°F Virginia Beach morning was the class of the F70-74 field, and her 2:00:44 finish held up comfortably.

Barbie Laughlin, 71, of The Villages, FL, ran a similar tactical race, surging from 734th in the women's field at 5K all the way to 617th by 20K before finishing 634th — a climb of 100 places through the women's field across the course. But her 9:21/mi pace left her 1:52 behind Astrop at the line, a gap that proved unbridgeable despite her own strong mid-race momentum.

The battle for third belonged to Mary Fout of Williamsburg, VA, who turned in a 2:18:36 at 10:34/mi — a significant step down from the front two but a steady performance highlighted by her 1105th-fastest women's split on the 15K→20K segment, the best of the F70-74 podium on that stretch. Dona Poole (2:24:37) and Carol Shirey (2:33:20) rounded out the top five, with Deb Wolfe just 32 seconds behind Shirey in sixth at 2:33:52 — the tightest gap anywhere in the top six.
