What makes Sykes' run worth more than a footnote is how she moved through the women's field over the back half of the race. After dipping to 3,375th among women at the 20K mark, she reeled in 71 places to hit 3,304th — a genuine surge late in a half marathon, at 83, in 95% humidity and an 11 mph wind. She finished 3,332nd among women, a touch off that peak but well clear of where she stood at 20K.

Covering 13.1 miles at any pace is a real athletic achievement. Doing it at 83, in conditions that tested every finisher in the field, makes Sykes the undisputed champion of her field — and one of the more remarkable stories of the day.
