In humid, breezy Virginia Beach conditions — 95% humidity and an 11 mph wind — Andy Jakubowitch of Dover, DE ran the kind of race that gets stronger as it goes. He entered the 5K–10K stretch already climbing through the men's field, moving from 35th to 30th among men, and by the final stretch had surged to 25th. His 6:18/mi average held firm across 13.1 miles, and his winning time of 1:22:38 left no doubt at the front of M45-49.

Steve Sinko, 49, from Wilmington, DE was the story of the chase. Running a steady 6:26/mi, Sinko moved methodically through the men's field — from 45th at the 5K to 38th at the finish — and locked up 2nd in 1:24:23. Behind him, Todd Musher of Warrenton, VA told the opposite tale: he started fast (31st among men through 5K) but gradually faded, slipping to 43rd by the finish. His 1:24:56 still earned him 3rd, but Sinko's catch-up through the second half was the real story of that battle — Sinko ran the 5K–10K segment as the 40th-fastest men's split, while Musher faded to 43rd on that same stretch.

Omen Quelvog (1:28:21, 6:44/mi) and Jason Widstrom (1:28:37, 6:46/mi) ran a compelling race within a race for 4th and 5th. Quelvog posted the 64th-fastest men's split on the 15K–20K segment to hold off Widstrom, who had been the stronger runner through the 10K–15K stretch. The 16-second margin between them at the line reflected just how close that duel remained all the way to the finish.

Carter Eggleston (6th, 1:31:56) and Charles Klee (7th, 1:32:06) rounded out the top seven, separated by just 10 seconds at 7:01 and 7:02/mi respectively — a noticeably different pace from the podium but a tight finish between themselves. Further back, Dan Weidensaul (9th, 1:34:06) and Antonio Garcia (10th, 1:34:08) crossed within two seconds of each other, while Timothy Pitt (14th, 1:40:55) and Benjamin Blackwood (15th, 1:40:57) were separated by a mere two seconds as well — proof that close racing ran deep through all 206 finishers in M45-49.
