Forty-seven-year-old Heyward Gould of Tuscaloosa set the tone for the M45-49 group from the gun, running a composed 7:31-per-mile pace across the 13.1 miles on a mild December morning in Huntsville — 59°F and overcast, about as cooperative as Alabama gets in mid-December. He entered the final 10K-to-finish segment in solid position and held it, crossing in 1:38:26 to take the age-group win.

Justin Darnell of Fort Drum, NY made things interesting in that closing stretch. His 10K-to-finish split was the 19th-fastest in the men's field on that segment — sharper than Gould's 23rd-fastest — meaning Darnell was gaining ground late. He closed to within 41 seconds, finishing in 1:39:07, but the deficit from the first half proved just too much to erase. It was a genuine race to the line between two athletes separated by only six seconds per mile on average.

William Collins of Southampton, NY ran a steady 8:46-per-mile effort to lock up 3rd in 1:54:57, finishing nearly 16 minutes behind Darnell and well ahead of the rest of the group. From 4th place onward, the field spread out considerably — Dave Legrand (1:59:20) and Jeff Poteralski (1:59:40) staged their own tight battle for 5th and 6th, separated by just 20 seconds. Byron Young rounded out the sub-2:05 finishers in 7th at 2:01:34.

The back half of the M45-49 field ranged from Jason Weber's 2:15:49 to Donald Howard's 3:02:17, with all 12 men finishing the course. Ryan Miles' recorded time of 8:58:47 appears to reflect a timing irregularity rather than a race result.
