Rocket City Half Marathon M20-24: Dwyer dominates a 13-man field

• Major Dwyer won the M20-24 age group in 1:31:13 (6:57/mi), finishing more than 23 minutes clear of the runner-up.
• Jonathan Fountain made the biggest move of the race, climbing from 107th to 64th among men on the 10K-to-finish segment — the 44th-fastest closing split in that stretch across the men's field.
• Just 51 seconds separated Dalton Lee (2nd, 1:54:19) from Michael Roque (3rd, 1:55:10), with Jonathan Fountain (4th, 1:56:21) only another 71 seconds back — three men packed within two minutes for the remaining podium spots.
• The spread from 1st to 13th was over an hour: Brandon Ogden closed out the age group in 2:39:30 (12:10/mi).

Major Dwyer made this one look straightforward. The 23-year-old from Huntsville posted a 6:57/mi average and moved from 17th to 13th among the men in the back half of the race, adding the 12th-fastest closing split among the men on the 10K-to-finish stretch. Nobody in the M20-24 group was going to catch him — the gap to second place was 23 minutes and 6 seconds.

Behind Dwyer, the real racing happened between Lee, Roque, and Fountain. Fountain was the most aggressive finisher of the three, surging from 107th to 64th among men over the final segment with the 44th-fastest closing split in that stretch — but he had too much ground to make up on Lee and Roque, who had built their cushion earlier in the race. Lee held on for 2nd at 1:54:19, Roque took 3rd at 1:55:10, and Fountain settled for 4th at 1:56:21 after his strong finish.

Austin Probst (5th, 2:03:38) and Brady Tuten (6th, 2:04:25) were separated by just 47 seconds, while the back half of the field spread out considerably — Cole Batson through Brandon Ogden covering a range from 2:11:41 to 2:39:30 across seven finishers. On a mild December morning in Huntsville, Dwyer was the clear class of the group; the battle for the rest of the podium was where the competition lived.
