Rocket City Half Marathon F50-54: Davies Leads Alabama to the Podium

Cheryl Davies ran a controlled, confident race through the mild December air in Huntsville — 59°F and overcast, the kind of morning that rewards steady pacing. Her 8:57/mi average was a full nine seconds per mile faster than runner-up Janet Tidwell, and that margin opened up enough that the real drama played out behind her. Tidwell (1:59:16) was comfortably clear of the podium battle but never threatened Davies at the front.

That battle for 3rd was genuinely tight. Kyoko Yamamoto and Leigh Dollar were separated by just 35 seconds at the finish — 2:04:32 to 2:05:07 — and both were pushing hard in the back half. Interestingly, Dollar actually posted the 59th-fastest women's closing split versus Yamamoto's 60th, meaning Dollar was fractionally stronger over 10K to the finish, but couldn't quite reel in the gap that had built before it. Yamamoto held on.

Sarah Roberts (5th, 2:07:15) and Katherine Harris (6th, 2:07:45) kept things competitive just off the podium, separated by only 30 seconds. The F50-54 field of 22 spread out considerably beyond that point, with the back half of the group ranging from 2:16 to nearly three and a half hours — a testament to the range of goals and paces that make an age group like this one genuinely diverse. Davies, though, was in a class of her own on the day.
