Toland wasn't leading at the 10K mark, sitting 3rd among men, but he turned in the 2nd-fastest closing split in the entire men's field from 10K to the finish line. That surge carried the 26-year-old Huntsville local all the way to the top of the age group in 1:18:32 — a 5:59/mi average that made it look almost comfortable.

Anthony Parameswaran of Gurley gave chase and made his own move on that same closing stretch, posting the 4th-fastest men's split from 10K in and climbing from 5th to 4th among men by the finish.
