Rocket City Half Marathon M40-44: Schmidt Dominates, Local Pack Battles for the Podium

• Justin Schmidt won the M40-44 group in 1:23:43 (6:23/mi), finishing 5th among men overall — the class of the field by nearly four minutes.
• Erik Debolt climbed from 12th to 9th among men on the 10K→Finish stretch, overtaking Joshua Swain (who held 10th) to lock up 3rd in M40-44 by just 31 seconds.
• Three runners — Christopher Lane, Colt Davis, and Carlos Olivares — finished 15th, 16th, and 17th in M40-44 within an 8-second window (1:59:01, 1:59:01, 1:59:09), with Lane edging Davis despite identical displayed times.
• The top-4 in M40-44 all broke 1:29, while a gap of over 4.5 minutes separated 4th from 5th — the sharpest single drop-off in the entire group.

Justin Schmidt came to Huntsville and made it look straightforward. Running 6:23 per mile on a mild December morning — 59°F, a light 9 mph breeze — the 43-year-old from Canton, GA crossed in 1:23:43, good for 5th among all men. He moved from 6th to 5th in the men's field over the final stretch, which tells you he was still pressing when others eased. Nobody in M40-44 came within 3:46 of him.

Behind Schmidt, the battle for the podium was genuinely contested. Tom Barnard of Madison held 8th among men steadily throughout and came home 2nd in M40-44 in 1:27:29. The real action was for third: Erik Debolt (Huntsville, 42) was sitting 12th among men at 10K but ran the 9th-fastest men's split on the back half to finish in 1:28:11, just edging out Joshua Swain (1:28:42), who had actually been ahead of him at the midpoint. A 31-second swing in the second half decided it.

Jermaine Wade and Brad Cupp — both from Hazel Green, AL — rounded out the top six, with Wade's 1:33:13 and Cupp's 1:34:00 separated by 47 seconds. Then came a notable lull before Thomas Frost and Kendall Dock arrived together at 1:38:35 and 1:38:46, an 11-second gap for 7th and 8th. Down near the 15th-place mark, Lane, Davis, and Olivares ran essentially the same race — three men, eight seconds, three separate states represented — with Lane taking 15th by the narrowest of margins over Davis despite the clock showing the same 1:59:01 for both.
