Karen Moore, 64, from Sherrills Ford, NC, didn't just win the F60-64 age group — she dominated it. Her 1:04:19 at a 10:21/mi clip was in a different conversation entirely from the rest of the field, a margin of over 12 minutes to the runner-up. On a cool, overcast day with a light 9 mph breeze, conditions were about as cooperative as a December race in Alabama gets, and Moore made full use of them.

Behind her, the race for 2nd was the morning's most compelling subplot. Miriam Samet of North Brunswick, NJ — at 60, the youngest in the group — crossed in 1:16:47, running 12:21/mi. Right on her heels was Huntsville's own Susan Woodworth, 64, finishing in 1:17:13. Twenty-six seconds separated them after 6.2 miles — a tight, hard-earned gap that Samet held to claim the silver.

Joyce Kenney of Wetumpka, AL finished a solid 4th in 1:23:52, while Kay Atwood (Rockvale, TN) rounded out the top five in 1:30:49. Donna Gregg, running on home turf in Huntsville, took 6th in 1:38:11, and Audrey Hannum of Bellbrook, OH closed out the field in 1:49:31 — every one of them earning their finish on a December race day.
