Rocket City 10K: Karen Kelly dominates the F55-59 field

• Karen Kelly won the F55-59 age group in 56:06 (9:02/mi) — more than five minutes clear of runner-up Lisa Hughey.
• The gap from 1st to 17th spanned nearly an hour, with all 17 finishers crossing between 56:06 and 1:55:38.
• Places 8 and 9 were separated by just 9 seconds — Lynne Foster (1:13:38) edging Tammy Bartley (1:13:47).
• The top four were all within 10 minutes of each other; after that, the field spread out considerably.

Karen Kelly made this one look straightforward. Running 9:02 per mile through a cool, overcast Huntsville morning, the 59-year-old finished in 56:06 — a margin of 5:08 over Lisa Hughey of Dalton, Georgia, who crossed in 1:01:14. That kind of cushion doesn't happen by accident; Kelly was simply in a different gear from the rest of the F55-59 field.

Behind Hughey, Missy Schulz claimed third in 1:04:57, and Tricia Houpt of Benton, Arkansas rounded out the podium positions in 1:06:12 — the only other finisher under 1:07. Those four established themselves as a clear front pack, with Melissa McDonald in fifth at 1:09:43 beginning a second, looser cluster.

The race's most compelling battle unfolded around eighth place, where Lynne Foster (1:13:38) and Tammy Bartley (1:13:47) ran virtually identical races — nine seconds apart after 6.2 miles. Stacy Brown and Lisa Seufert had crossed just ahead of them within the same 48-second window, making positions 6 through 9 the tightest contest of the day in this group.

At the back of the field, Lorna Dore of Charlotte finished the 17th and final spot in 1:55:38 — an 18:37/mi pace that still represents a completed 10K on a December morning in Huntsville. All 17 women who started, finished.
