F55-59 at the Marine Corps Marathon: Dyer Dominates on a Crisp October Morning

Stephanie Dyer came to Arlington and made the F55-59 race her own from early on. Running a steady 7:46/mi out of St. Petersburg, FL, she moved through the women's field efficiently in the opening miles and never relinquished her position at the top of the F55-59 standings. Her 3:23:48 finish was a commanding performance on a cold, overcast morning — 43°F with a light breeze — conditions that rewarded those who went out controlled and stayed there.

Behind Dyer, Portland's Jun Shan (3:31:16, 8:03/mi) ran a measured race, holding a consistent position in the women's field from 10K onward and claiming second by nearly 6 minutes over third-place Yuehling Lin (3:37:17, 8:17/mi). Lin, representing Kaohsiung, showed particular strength in the 15K–21K segment — her split there ranked 294th among all women — but faded in the back half, sliding from 324th among women at the halfway point to 395th at the finish.

The most compelling subplot belonged to Irma Palmer of Birmingham. Starting well back in the women's field, she spent the entire race passing people — crossing the 5K mat as the 1,529th woman, then grinding her way forward checkpoint by checkpoint until she crossed the line 4th in F55-59 at 3:39:17. Her closing split from 40K to the finish was the 103rd-fastest among all women in the race. Washington, DC's Neile Quintero (3:39:26) had done enough earlier to stay just ahead — 9 seconds separated them at the line — but it was Palmer who was flying at the end.
