The real drama played out behind her, where Sara Dutton and Evelyn Brown spent the back half of the race running nearly in lockstep. Brown was actually the stronger climber through the 30K–35K stretch, posting the 4,863rd-fastest women's split on that segment and gradually pulling closer to Dutton. Dutton, however, responded with a stronger 35K–40K leg — her 5,147th-fastest women's split on that stretch was enough to hold Brown at bay. At the line, just 38 seconds separated 2nd from 3rd: Dutton in 5:58:02 at 13:39/mi, Brown in 5:58:40 at 13:41/mi. The gap was narrow; the paces were not identical — Dutton earned her place.

Nena Shaheed rounded out the four-finisher field in 6:25:44 (14:43/mi), but her 35K–40K split — the 1,151st-fastest among all women on that segment — was the standout late-race effort in this group, suggesting she found another gear when it mattered.
