Sarah Hallas came to Arlington and made it look like a training run — at least by comparison. Running 6:41/mi through the monuments and past the memorials, the Cotati, CA runner was sitting 16th among women at the midpoint and quietly climbed back to 13th by the finish. Her 13th-fastest women's split from 30K to 35K was the engine of that move, and her final 2:55:03 left everyone else in the F45-49 field well behind. In a race that offers no prize money — only the glory of the Iwo Jima finish — Hallas earned every step of it.

Behind her, Shannon Bueker from Belmont, MA was in a race of her own. Her 3:04:36 (7:02/mi) was a clear and comfortable 2nd, and her 34th-fastest women's split from 35K to 40K showed she was building momentum late, climbing from 51st to 41st among women over that stretch.

The real drama unfolded in the fight for 3rd. Nancy Jurgens (3:18:01), Rachel Medefind (3:18:21), and Allison Cass (3:18:59) finished within 58 seconds of each other across the line — but they got there very differently.
