F50-54: Karen Sobrino Runs Down the Field in Washington

On a crisp 43°F morning past the monuments of Arlington and Washington D.C., Karen Sobrino of Durban ran a composed, controlled marathon to take the F50-54 title in 3:10:40. She was never in crisis — her women's gender place drifted slightly from 54th at 5K to 75th at the midpoint, then she reeled it back in to 69th by the finish, a sign of late-race strength at 7:16 per mile. Her 68th-fastest women's split on the 5K–10K segment was an early signal she meant business, and she backed it up all the way to the finish line.

The race for second was decided in the back half. Kaari Liisi Linask of Rockville entered the 30K checkpoint at 118th among women and started moving — posting the 78th-fastest women's split on the 30K–35K stretch and eventually finishing 2nd in 3:14:17 (7:25/mi). That's a 3:37 gap to Sobrino, but a comfortable 12:01 cushion over 3rd-place Danielle Soroka of Salisbury, NC, who crossed in 3:26:18 at 7:52/mi.

The most compelling subplot belonged to Shinobu Kusakabe of Kensington, MD. She was dead last among women at the 5K checkpoint — 436th — and simply refused to stay there. Checkpoint by checkpoint she climbed: 420th, 387th, 350th, 293rd, 232nd, and finally 224th at the line, finishing 4th in 3:28:03. Her 139th-fastest women's split on the 35K–40K segment shows she was still accelerating deep into the race.

Rounding out the top ten: Kathryn Evans (London, 5th, 3:29:00), Chrysanthemum Lawson (Valparaiso, IN, 6th, 3:30:00), Maegan Carlisle (Seattle, 7th, 3:31:47), Jennifer Hickey (Washington, DC, 8th, 3:33:50), Liping Song (Chapel Hill, NC, 9th, 3:35:57), and local Arlington runner Daryle Lademan rounding out the top ten in 3:36:19 — all part of a 436-strong F50-54 field that filled the streets of the People's Marathon with serious racing.
