Women's Handcycle: Murphy holds off Kenton in a 39-second thriller

Murphy and Kenton turned the women's handcycle race into a two-athlete contest from the opening segment, and it never really stopped being one. Murphy held the top spot at every single checkpoint — 5K, 10K, 15K, and beyond — while Kenton shadowed her in 2nd the entire way. Kenton struck back on the 5K→10K leg, posting the fastest women's split there, but Murphy answered with the fastest women's split on the 10K→15K stretch. When the 26.2-mile loop through Washington D.C. and Arlington was done, Murphy crossed in 2:00:10 to Kenton's 2:00:49 — a 39-second margin that reflects just how evenly matched these two were at the front.

Behind that lead battle, the race for 3rd had its own drama. Jessica Hayon started 4th but moved up to 3rd by the 10K checkpoint and never relinquished it, finishing in 2:27:20. The gap she opened over 4th place — more than 26 minutes — made her podium spot secure well before the finish.

The late race produced one more position change worth noting. Holly Koester had held 3rd through the early miles before Hayon passed her, and she eventually settled into 5th. Corey Petersen, meanwhile, climbed steadily from 5th to 4th and sealed it with the 3rd-fastest women's split on the 40K→Finish segment, finishing in 2:32:01 to Koester's 2:35:38. Amanda Seward rounded out the top six in 2:38:30 (6:03/mi), while Jennifer Hogan (4:02:49), Andrea Collins (3:57:28), Bronwen Thompson (6:17:42), and Marcela Carreno (6:20:33) completed the ten-woman field on one of the most iconic marathon courses in the country.
