M60-64: Haaga Runs Down the Field to Take the Title

• Dave Haaga (Rockville, MD) won the M60-64 race in 3:13:13 (7:22/mi), the only finisher in this group to break 3:15.
• Wengang Yang finished 2nd in 3:17:11 — nearly 4 minutes back — after running a remarkably consistent race through the men's field all day.
• Floyd Whitehurst made the most dramatic move of the race, climbing from outside the top 1,700 men at 5K all the way to 1,040th by the finish, landing 4th in 3:27:34.
• Mario Zuniga ran the opposite arc — entering the top 530 men early before fading to 1,082nd, finishing 5th in 3:28:35.

Dave Haaga came to Arlington and got to work. Starting the men's race around 835th, he steadily threaded his way forward checkpoint by checkpoint — 835, 745, 721, 661, 654, 627, 584, 541 — arriving at the finish 536th among men in 3:13:13 at a 7:22-per-mile clip. That kind of sustained, progressive move through a field of thousands on a cold 43-degree morning past the monuments of Washington is exactly what wins age-group races, and it did here.

Wengang Yang, racing from Beijing, was the picture of even-keeled running — his men's field position barely wavered from start to finish, hovering in the 750s for much of the race before closing to 654th. His 3:17:11 earned him 2nd in M60-64, nearly four minutes behind Haaga. Bhavananda Reddy of Prescott, AZ went out relatively quick — posting the 763rd-fastest men's split on the opening 5K–10K stretch — but faded progressively through the back half, slipping from around 770th in the men's field to 937th by the finish line, landing 3rd in 3:25:09.

The most compelling subplot belonged to Floyd Whitehurst of Chesapeake, VA, who staged one of the great slow-burn rallies of the day. Sitting outside the top 1,700 men at 5K, he ran down competitor after competitor to finish 1,040th among men — 4th in M60-64 in 3:27:34. Right behind him, Mario Zuniga of Front Royal, VA told the mirror-image story: fast out of the gate near 526th in the men's field, he faded to 1,082nd, settling for 5th in 3:28:35. Behind them, a tight cluster — Tim Dwyer (6th, 3:29:53), Kevin Madden (7th, 3:30:16), and Paul Gregory (8th, 3:30:21) — all finished within 28 seconds of each other, with 363 men total completing the M60-64 race at 'The People's Marathon.'
