George Crist, running out of Davis, CA, was the story from the gun. He was already climbing through the men's field by 10K, where he posted the fastest men's split of the 10K–15K segment, and by the second half he had moved all the way to the front. He held that lead wire to wire through the final three checkpoints, finishing in 2:26:19 at a relentless 5:35/mi.

Daniel Soltys of Falmouth ran a measured, steadily improving race — moving from 12th among men early to 6th by the finish in 2:29:53. He had the 9th-fastest men's split on that same 10K–15K stretch, but Crist's pace there was simply on another level. Soltys crossed in 2:29:53, a clear 3:34 back of the winner but a comfortable cushion over the rest.

The subplot of the race belonged to Zach Szczesniak of Arlington, VA — racing what amounted to a home course. Buried 38th among men through 20K, he unleashed the 4th-fastest men's split on the 30K–35K segment to scythe through the field, ultimately finishing 10th among men and 3rd in M25-29 in 2:32:18. Behind the podium, the 4th-through-8th finishers — Spak, Simon, Prothero, Schultz, and Thompson — were all clocked between 2:34:10 and 2:35:16, a 66-second corridor that made for one of the tightest mid-pack battles of the morning.
