M50-54: Bodewig Holds Off a Late Charge to Win the People's Marathon

Christian Bodewig won the M50-54 race at the 2024 Marine Corps Marathon, but he had to earn every second of it. Running a steady 6:39/mi, Bodewig actually drifted backward through the men's field during the middle miles — sliding from 224th among men at the first checkpoint to 243rd by the 21K mark — before methodically reeling runners back in over the second half. By the finish he had climbed back to 170th among men, and his 110th-fastest men's split on the 40K-to-finish segment tells you exactly when he turned the screws.

Tae Hyun Lee (Fairfax, VA) made the race genuinely tense. Lee ran the 15K–21K stretch with the 138th-fastest men's split in the entire field — a sharp mid-race push that moved him from 342nd among men at the opening checkpoint all the way to 168th by 35K. That surge closed the gap considerably, but it wasn't quite enough: Lee crossed in 2:54:22, 12 seconds behind Bodewig. Same 6:39/mi average pace, different stories — Bodewig built his margin early and defended it late, while Lee's catch-up run fell just short.

Jaya Shetty (Culver City, CA) ran a controlled 6:56/mi to finish third in 3:02:00, a comfortable gap back from the top two but well clear of 4th-place Shawn Husband (Bentonville, AR), who clocked 3:03:50 at 7:01/mi. Adam Baker rounded out the top five in 3:07:42. Behind them, a remarkably tight cluster formed: Gabriel Milla (3:13:55) and Edward Sampt (3:14:00) finished just five seconds apart for 8th and 9th, while four runners — Gael Gregoire, Dave Weikert, Michael Smith, and Marcio Neves — all finished within seven seconds of each other between 3:14:44 and 3:14:55. In a race that offers no prize money by design, the M50-54 field gave plenty of reasons to watch anyway.
