Connor Roche was not the flashiest name at the front early. Through the first 30K he was bouncing between 6th and 14th among the men's field, never quite asserting himself. Then came the 30K–35K segment, where he posted the fastest men's split of anyone on that stretch. That surge vaulted him from 6th to 3rd among men, and he never looked back, finishing M30-34 champion in 2:27:44.

The real drama behind him belonged to Luke Gilman and the ghost of Jordan Tropf. Tropf (Tamuning) blazed out with the 2nd-fastest men's 5K–10K split, sitting 2nd among men at the 10K mark. He held that aggression through halfway but gradually slipped — by the finish he was 4th in M30-34 at 2:32:57. Meanwhile Gilman (Stafford, VA) was doing the opposite, methodically climbing from 21st among men at 5K all the way to 4th by the finish. His 2nd-fastest men's split on the 35K–40K segment was a genuine closing move, and his 2:28:17 (5:39/mi) left him just 33 seconds off Roche — close in time, but Roche had already done his damage a segment earlier.

Mark Duffett (Wareham) rounded out the podium in 2:32:21 (5:49/mi), climbing steadily from 40th among men at 5K to 11th by the finish, aided by the 6th-fastest men's split on the 30K–35K segment — the same stretch where Roche made his defining move. William Pannell (Ilminster) was another patient climber, going from 41st among men at the opening checkpoint to 5th in M30-34 at 2:33:47, fueled by the 12th-fastest men's split on the 15K–21K segment. In a field of 1,564, patience and a well-timed surge proved to be the winning formula.
