Women's Boilermaker 15K: Nawowuna Surges to the Tape in an Electrifying Finish

• Grace Loibach Nawowuna wins in 49:18 (5:17/mi), edging Emmaculate Anya Achol by the finest of margins — both credited with 49:18, but Nawowuna crossed first.
• Jesca Chelangat led at 5K, but faded from 1st to 4th over the final segment, finishing in 49:37 — 19 seconds behind the winner who once sat 33rd among women at the opening checkpoint.
• The top five were separated by just 20 seconds, with Mestawut Fikir (49:38, 5:20/mi) rounding out a remarkably compressed elite battle.
• Cynthia Limo, the 2016 Boilermaker champion, returned to the podium at 34, finishing 3rd in 49:20 with the 3rd-fastest middle split among the women.

The 88% humidity hanging over Utica made the 5:17/mi pace that decided this race all the more striking. Through the first 5K, neither Nawowuna nor her eventual runner-up Achol were anywhere near the front — Nawowuna sat 33rd among women, Achol 28th. Up front, it was Chelangat, the 2023 course record holder (47:33), who had seized the lead by the 5K checkpoint, with Cynthia Limo right behind her in 2nd.

Then came the middle segment, and everything changed. Nawowuna posted the fastest women's split from 5K to 10K, vaulting from 33rd to 4th. Achol wasn't far behind, moving from 28th to 8th on the 4th-fastest split in that stretch. Chelangat, meanwhile, began to fade — she'd led at 5K but couldn't hold the pace, ultimately finishing 4th in 49:37. Limo, steady throughout with the 3rd-fastest middle split, held her ground for the bronze in 49:20.

The final 5K was Achol's strongest segment — she posted the fastest women's closing split in the field — but it wasn't quite enough. Nawowuna had already done the decisive damage in the middle miles, and she held on to win by the slimmest margin timing can measure. Behind the top five, the battle for the rest of the top ten was no less competitive: Kasanesh Ayenew (50:09), Bontu Rebitu (50:11), Annamaria Kostarellis (50:18), Vicoty Chepngeno (50:21), and Jackie Gaughan (50:35) all finished within 26 seconds of each other across places 6 through 10. In a women's field of 3,502, the race at the front was as tight as it gets.
