M30-34: Kibiwott edges out a Kenyan 1-2 in a scorching Boilermaker opener

• Boniface Kibiwott won M30-34 in 43:26 (4:40/mi), climbing from 15th among men at 5K to 5th by the finish.
• The gap from 1st to 3rd — Kibiwott, Edmond Kipngetich (43:35), and Biya Simbassa (43:53) — was just 27 seconds across the top three.
• Andrew Bowman (45:47) and Tristan Woodfine (45:56) were the top American and Canadian, respectively, each surging hard through the second half.
• A field of 596 finishers in M30-34 made this one of the deepest age groups on the course.

Boniface Kibiwott of Iten crossed in 43:26 to claim M30-34, running 4:40/mi through a sticky 88% humidity morning in Utica. He was only 15th among men through the opening 5K, but by 10K he had carved his way to 5th — and held it all the way to the tape. His 5K-to-10K split ranked 4th fastest among all men on that segment, the engine that drove his title.

Right behind him, compatriot Edmond Kipngetich of Kericho finished in 43:35, having made his own steady climb from 16th among men at 5K to 6th at the finish. Kipngetich's 10K-to-finish split ranked 5th fastest among all men on that closing stretch — a strong closer who kept the margin to just nine seconds. Biya Simbassa of Flagstaff rounded out the podium in 43:53, his 4:42/mi pace and an 8th-fastest men's split on the middle segment powering a move from 19th to 8th among men overall. All three were well inside 44 minutes — a genuine elite front pack.

Then came a significant gap before the next wave. Andrew Bowman (Ferndale, MI) ran 45:47 for 4th, having surged from 37th among men at 5K all the way to 13th by the finish — his closing split ranking 13th fastest among all men on that leg. Tristan Woodfine of Cobden, ON was just nine seconds behind in 45:56, with the 11th-fastest men's closing split, making him the top Canadian in the group. Stephen Rathbun — the 2021 Boilermaker overall men's winner — came home 6th in M30-34 with a 48:57, a reminder of how deep this particular age group ran on a warm July morning in Utica.
