M50-54: Rushworth Runs Away with It in Utica

Terry Rushworth set the tone early and never let up. Starting the race around 339th among the men, he had already climbed to 161st by the 10K mark and finished 144th — a steady, controlled surge through the field at 6:03/mi. His closing leg was particularly sharp: he posted the 134th-fastest split among all women on the 10K-to-finish stretch, a measure of just how strong he was running in the back half of a 15K on a humid July morning in Utica.

Derrick Jones gave chase and ran a solid 57:23 (6:09/mi) for second, but Rushworth had built too much of a cushion. Behind Jones, Derek Grout (59:12, 6:21/mi) and Warren Isfan (59:31, 6:23/mi) waged a close war for the final podium spot, separated by just 19 seconds at the line. Both men ran the 5K-to-10K segment at a similar clip — Grout posting the 192nd-fastest split in that stretch among women, Isfan the 200th — but Grout's edge was built earlier and he held it to the finish.

Brent Workman put together the most dramatic second half of anyone in the top five. He was 615th among men at the 5K mark but stormed home to finish 259th — a massive move — and his 10K-to-finish split ranked 237th among all women in the field, helping him claim 5th in 1:00:21. Lee Sossen (1:00:59) was close enough to keep it interesting at 6th, but the gap to 7th place — Dean Geesler at 1:04:17 — was a chasm that told its own story about where the true front pack ended.
