M25-29: Korir Edges Yimer in a 42-Second Duel at the Front

• John Korir, 42:11 — won the M25-29 field and climbed from 22nd to 1st among men across the final 10K, posting the fastest men's split on the 5K→10K segment.
• Jemal Yimer, 42:19 — defending Boilermaker champion (2022 and 2023) finished 8 seconds back in 2nd, running the 2nd-fastest men's split on that same middle segment.
• Wesley Kiptoo, 43:13 — 3rd in M25-29, adding the 3rd-fastest men's 5K→10K split and holding off Yemane Hailesellassie (4th, 43:22) by nine seconds.
• 573 finishers in the M25-29 field made this one of the deepest cohorts of the day, with the top five all breaking 43:40 on a humid Utica morning.

The headline race within the M25-29 field was a genuine duel between two men running 4:32-per-mile pace — and it was decided by eight seconds. John Korir, 27, out of Eldoret, started the day buried in 22nd place among men through the opening 5K, but the middle segment told a different story. He posted the fastest men's split from 5K to 10K in the entire field, vaulting to 3rd overall among men, and then closed it out to take the win in 42:11 — just five seconds off the course record set by his rival Jemal Yimer a year ago.

That rival, Yimer — the 27-year-old from Addis Ababa who owns both the 2022 and 2023 Boilermaker titles — ran a nearly identical 4:32-per-mile average but couldn't match Korir's surge through the middle miles. Yimer ran the 2nd-fastest men's split on the 5K→10K stretch, moving from 17th to 2nd among men, and finished there, 8 seconds behind Korir. Defending a Boilermaker title is hard enough; Korir made it harder.

Wesley Kiptoo (43:13, 3rd) and Yemane Hailesellassie (43:22, 4th), both training out of Flagstaff, AZ, rounded out a strong podium chase. Hailesellassie actually posted the 3rd-fastest men's split on the closing 10K-to-finish segment — a strong finish — but Kiptoo had built enough of a cushion through the middle to hold him off by nine seconds. Peter Mwaniki Njeru (43:39, 5th) completed a top five where every man broke 43:40, a remarkable depth of talent in the M25-29 field.

Further back, Sisay Fekadu Berhanu (44:41, 6th) and Matthew Baxter (45:05, 7th) led a second wave, with local runner Paul O'Donnell of Syracuse (47:55, 10th) and Stephen Paddock of Baldwinsville (48:08, 12th) flying the regional flag deep in a 573-man field.
