Men's Boilermaker 15K: Korir Dethrones the Defending Champion

John Korir arrived in Utica as a relative unknown in this field and left as the champion. He was sitting 22nd at the first checkpoint, well off the pace of the leaders, but the 5K-to-10K segment was where the race was won. Korir ran that stretch faster than anyone else in the men's field — a surge that carried him from 22nd all the way to 3rd, and he didn't stop there. By the finish line he had Yimer covered, 42:11 to 42:19, claiming the title in his Boilermaker debut.

Jemal Yimer, the two-time defending champion who set the course record of 42:06 here in 2023, moved efficiently through the first half — 17th at 5K, up to 2nd by 10K — but Korir's middle surge was simply too much to answer. Yimer's 42:19 is a strong run in its own right, and his second-fastest split on that critical 5K-to-10K segment shows he was pushing, not fading. He just ran into someone faster on the day.

Wesley Kiptoo rounded out the podium in 43:13, also making a decisive middle-race move (21st to 4th by 10K, then 3rd at the finish) with the third-fastest split on that segment. Yemane Hailesellassie (4th, 43:22) and Boniface Kibiwott (5th, 43:26) completed a top five separated by just 71 seconds — a tight, competitive finish to what was clearly a front-loaded tactical race. The rest of the top 20 spread out from there, with the field of 4,466 men ultimately spanning the full range of Utica's storied streets.
