The 23-year-old from Liverpool ran a 6:09/mi average to finish in 19:07 — a margin so commanding that by the time he crossed the line, the race for 2nd place was still very much being decided. That gap of 2 minutes and 27 seconds to the runner-up wasn't a close win; it was a statement.

Behind McGowan, the real drama belonged to Senthilkumar and Carney.
