Boilermaker 5K Women's 25–29: Giruzzi pulls clear in the Utica heat

• Closest battle of the day: Victoria Houser (2nd, 22:46) and Sarah Spech (3rd, 22:47) — separated by a single second after 3.1 miles in 84°F heat.
• Top five spread: Maryclaire Haseley (4th, 23:38) and Alaina Clifford (5th, 23:56) rounded out the podium chase, with the entire top five finishing inside 23:56.
• Deep field: 227 finishers in the F25-29 race, with Kelly Vincent (20th, 27:30) running 8:51/mi and still more than 200 runners behind her.

Gianna Giruzzi of Clayville, NY made this one look authoritative. Her 21:16 — averaging 6:51 per mile in humid, 84-degree conditions — was in a class of its own among the 25-29 women, with no one else breaking 22:45. That 1:30 margin over second place is the kind of gap that says the race for the win was settled early and stayed settled.

The real drama unfolded a step behind her. Victoria Houser (Oneida, NY) and Sarah Spech (Brooklyn, NY) ran what amounted to a dead sprint to the line — Houser finishing 2nd in 22:46, Spech 3rd in 22:47. One second separating two runners over 5 kilometers is a finish that rewards both and punishes neither, and at a 7:20/mi average for each, the gap between them was decided by something far smaller than their shared effort.

Maryclaire Haseley (4th, 23:38) and Alaina Clifford (5th, 23:56) kept the top five tight by the standards of a large field, with Geralyn Swald (6th, 24:22) and Emily Volk (7th, 24:35) — the lone Colorado representative in the mix — not far behind. From there the field fanned out steadily, with Julia Kovalovsky (8th, 25:32), Natalie Wolanski (9th, 25:59), and Marisa Cioffi (10th, 26:09) rounding out the top ten in a race where every second earned in the Utica summer counted.
