M15-19: Casatelli Dominates the Boilermaker 5K in Utica Heat

• Dan Casatelli, 16, wins in 15:51 — a 5:06/mi average that left the field a full 1:06 behind at the line.

Dan Casatelli, just 16 years old out of Deansboro, NY, turned in a commanding performance — crossing in 15:51 at a 5:06/mi clip that nobody in the M15-19 field came close to matching. Runner-up Owen Sweet of Utica finished in 16:57, a full minute and six seconds adrift, which tells you everything about how thoroughly Casatelli controlled this race from start to finish in the July heat.

Behind Sweet, the battle for the final podium spot was genuinely sharp. Drew Patterson, 16, of Bloomington, IL, held off Reed Luton, 15, of Nedrow by just 10 seconds — 17:08 to 17:18 — with Luton running a notably faster 5:34/mi compared to Patterson's 5:31/mi, making it a close but hard-earned third for Patterson. Sawyer Sweet, Owen's younger brother, came home 5th in 17:57 to complete a strong family showing for Utica.

The top six were all under 18:10, and then the field spread out noticeably — Christopher Carbone (6th, 18:06) gave way to Benjamin Lohmann (7th, 19:03) and Anthony Swinson (8th, 19:07), with a cluster of runners from New Hartford and Canastota filling out the top 14. Conditions were legitimately demanding — 84°F with humidity — which makes the sub-16-minute win from a 16-year-old all the more striking.
