M50-54 Half Marathon: Tahiliani dominates as local Folsom runners lead the way

• Rajnish Tahiliani won the M50-54 group in 1:38:40 (7:32/mi), finishing more than 21 minutes clear of 2nd place — the largest margin in the seven-man field.
• Sean Meehan held a steady pace to claim 2nd in 2:00:34 (9:12/mi), with Juan Munoz rounding out the podium in 2:08:32 (9:48/mi).
• The tightest battle came for 4th and 5th: Carlos Contreras (2:13:17) edged Randall Gunther (2:14:48) by just 91 seconds.
• The field spanned nearly 70 minutes from first to last, with Gurjeet Singh completing the course in 2:48:50 at a 12:53/mi pace.

Rajnish Tahiliani, 53, of Folsom, turned in the kind of performance that makes the rest of the field look like it's running a different race. His 7:32/mi average over 13.1 miles in 74°F heat was simply in another class — and he backed it up with a strong close, posting the 10th-fastest split on the Mile 10-to-Finish stretch among the men, moving from 18th to 13th in the men's field over that final stretch. That finishing kick is a detail worth noting: he didn't just build a lead and coast, he kept pressing.

Behind him, Sean Meehan ran a composed and consistent race out of Sacramento, moving steadily through the men's field and holding his position well in the back half. Juan Munoz, also from Sacramento, had a trickier afternoon — he was moving up through the men's field early but faded in the Mile 4-to-Mile 10 segment, and the final standings reflected that drift. Still, a sub-2:09 half marathon at 50 is a solid day's work.

The real drama in this seven-man group played out in the fight for 4th. Carlos Contreras actually ran the stronger back half, climbing from 86th to 68th in the men's field across the race, while Randall Gunther faded slightly late. That momentum carried Contreras to a 91-second advantage at the line. Clifford Banagan and Gurjeet Singh brought home the field, with Singh's 2:48:50 closing out a wide-ranging M50-54 group that covered nearly every pace on the spectrum.
