Women's Half Marathon: Clancy surges past Gustafson to take the win in Folsom

• 5th and 6th decided by timing alone: Jonah Weeks and Jennifer Schmidt both crossed in 1:38:33 (7:31/mi), but Weeks edges Schmidt by the finest of margins to claim 5th.

The women's race had a clear early leader in Laura Gustafson, who held first place through the opening miles before Nicole Clancy — running out of Rancho Cordova — made her move. Clancy posted the fastest women's split from Mile 4 through Mile 10, and that was the decisive blow. She never relinquished the lead from that point, crossing in 1:23:48 at a brisk 6:24/mi pace. Gustafson, to her credit, answered with the second-fastest split on that same stretch and kept the gap from ballooning — but 2:03 is a comfortable margin at this level, and Clancy was in command.

Emma Grupe, racing in her hometown of Folsom, locked in third from the gun and never wavered, finishing in 1:33:10 (7:06/mi) — nearly eight minutes behind Gustafson but a solid 3:03 clear of fourth-place Julia Freimuth (1:36:13, 7:20/mi). The top four positions were remarkably stable across all three checkpoints, with no position changes from start to finish among the leaders.

The battle for fifth was the race's tightest finish: Jonah Weeks (1:38:33) and Jennifer Schmidt (1:38:33) were inseparable on the clock, with Weeks claiming 5th by the narrowest of timing margins. Behind them, Addie Payne (7th, 1:44:01) and Cheryl Taylor (8th, 1:45:19) rounded out a strong top ten — Taylor's 8:02/mi pace at age 60 deserving a special mention in a competitive women's field.
