• Vickie Varnes won the F60-64 group in 26:00 (8:22/mi) — more than 10 minutes and 40 seconds clear of the field.
• Angela McKenzie and Jeannie Lillystone both clocked 36:43 at 11:49/mi, yet the places differ — McKenzie edged Lillystone by the slimmest of margins for 2nd.
• The 12-woman field spanned nearly 32 minutes from first to last, with Varnes's pace nearly half again as fast as the back of the pack.

Vickie Varnes, 61, from Pell City, put on a clinic. Her 8:22/mi pace wasn't just fast for the F60-64 group — it was a statement. She crossed in 26:00 while the next finisher was still well short of the halfway point of their race clock, and that 10:43 winning margin left no drama at the front whatsoever.

The real suspense played out behind her. Angela McKenzie of Athens and Jeannie Lillystone of Royal Oak, Michigan, both registered 36:43 on the clock, but the timing system separated them: McKenzie takes 2nd, Lillystone 3rd. A gap invisible to the naked eye, but real nonetheless. Julie Bonner of Decatur came in 4th at 40:57, a clear 4:14 back from that tandem.

The middle and back of the field spread across a wide range of paces, from Patricia Shackelford's 14:56/mi in 5th to Jackie Greer's 18:35/mi closing out the group in 57:45. Nancy Downard, Shari Shrum, and Kedra Burris arrived within a tight 30-second window — 53:22, 53:27, and 53:52 respectively — making that stretch the most competitive cluster outside of the McKenzie-Lillystone photo finish. All 12 women finished on a mild December day in Huntsville, and every one of them earned it.
