Rocket City Half Marathon M50-54: Davidson Dominates, Carter Closes Hard

• Chad Davidson (age 54, Carrollton, GA) won the M50-54 group in 1:51:35 — an 8:31/mi average that put more than two minutes of clear air between him and the field.
• Jason Carter (age 51, Mountain Brook, AL) was the strongest finisher in the top three, climbing from 92nd to 84th among men on the back half to claim 2nd in 1:53:40.
• Brian Quan (age 53, Raleigh, NC) rounded out the podium in 1:55:42 — but faded slightly late, slipping from 87th to 95th among men on the 8M-to-finish stretch.
• Places 14–16 were decided by a razor's edge: Leduke, Rios, and Herndon all clocked 2:30:14, 2:30:21, and 2:30:24 — ten seconds covering three men.

Chad Davidson made winning look measured. Running 8:31 per mile across 13.1 miles on a mild but breezy December morning in Huntsville, the 54-year-old from Carrollton put the M50-54 race to bed early. His 2:05 margin over second place is the kind of gap that says the outcome was never really in doubt — and it's worth noting he did it at the top end of the age group, outlasting men three years his junior.

Jason Carter told a different story with the second half of his race. After sitting 92nd among men at the 8-mile mark, he reeled off the fastest closing split of any M50-54 podium finisher, surging to 84th among men by the finish. That's not a small move in a crowded field. Brian Quan, meanwhile, ran the inverse — moving from 87th to 95th among men after mile 8, giving back some ground but still holding 3rd comfortably at 1:55:42 and 8:50/mi.

Behind the podium, the group spread out across a wide middle pack before tightening again in dramatic fashion around the 2:30 mark. Matthew Leduke, Jason Rios, and Cale Herndon — all running 11:28/mi — finished within ten seconds of each other across 14th, 15th, and 16th place. Twenty-seven men in all finished the M50-54 group, with seven more beyond the listed top 20 adding to a strong showing for the age group in Huntsville.
