The 14-year-old from Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, went the full distance at Rocket City on a mild December morning — 59°F and overcast, with a light 9 mph breeze — and came home in 1:59:56, breaking the two-hour barrier by four seconds.

At 9:09 per mile, Vetsch ran a composed, measured race. The closing leg from mile 8 to the finish was his chance to show what he had left, and he delivered a 132nd-fastest split among the men on that stretch — a respectable showing against a full adult field.
