Rocket City 5K: Felicia Stevens Tops the Women's Field in Huntsville

• Stevens wins in 22:25 (7:13/mi), nearly a minute and a half clear of 2nd place — the dominant margin of the day among the women.
• Tight battle for 3rd: Cynthia Mitchell (24:24, 7:51/mi) held off Rachel Evans (24:27, 7:52/mi) by just three seconds.
• 5th and 6th decided by timing alone: Harper Debolt and Amanda Steinmetz both crossed in 24:42 at 7:57/mi, with Debolt — at just 14 years old — edging Steinmetz for 5th by the finest of margins.
• Youth and experience on display: 13-year-old Erica Sandlin finished 19th in 27:06, while 61-year-old Vickie Varnes crossed 13th in 26:00 — faster than six women behind her half her age.

Felicia Stevens, 43, made the trip from Ashland, Kentucky, and made it count. Her 22:25 finish at a 7:13/mi clip was in a class of its own among the 234 women who finished the race — runner-up Megan Light of Arab, Alabama came home in 23:52 (7:41/mi), a gap of 1:27 that was never seriously in doubt. Light's 7:41 pace was solid in its own right, but Stevens was simply running a different race.

Behind Light, the real drama unfolded in the fight for the final podium spot. Athens, Alabama's Cynthia Mitchell, 47, ran a composed 7:51/mi to finish 3rd in 24:24. Rachel Evans of Meridianville gave chase and crossed just three seconds later in 24:27 — close enough to feel the finish line, not quite close enough to claim the podium.

One of the afternoon's better storylines arrived at 5th place, where 14-year-old Harper Debolt of Huntsville matched 30-year-old Amanda Steinmetz stride for stride — both clocking 24:42 — yet Debolt's name landed above Steinmetz's in the results. Equally notable: Vickie Varnes of Pell City, running at 61, posted a 26:00 (8:22/mi) to finish 13th, ahead of several finishers decades younger. On a mild December morning in Huntsville — 59°F with a light breeze — Stevens set the standard and the rest of the field chased it across all 234 finishers.
