On a humid July morning in Utica — 75°F and 90% humidity — John Korir made his title defense look methodical. The 28-year-old from Fortville, IN, led from start to finish, never surrendering his top spot through the 5K or 10K checkpoints, and crossed in 42:44 at 4:35/mi. It's a tick slower than his 2024 winning time of 42:11, but in those conditions, leading a field of nearly 4,750 men to the tape is a statement all its own.

Hillary Kipkoech of Eldoret was Korir's shadow the entire way, holding 2nd through every checkpoint and finishing in 43:08 — 24 seconds back. The real drama played out just behind them. Simbassa (Flagstaff, AZ) briefly slipped to 4th between the 10K mark and the finish but came roaring back with the second-fastest closing split in the field to reclaim the bronze in 43:28. Meanwhile, Patrick Kiprop had climbed as high as 3rd by 10K before fading to 5th (43:37), and Kiptoo made the opposite journey — charging from 7th all the way to 4th (43:36) on the strength of the third-fastest closing split. Those two finished just one second apart.

Charles Hicks (23, Eugene, OR) rounded out the top six in 43:39, completing a front pack where places 4 through 6 were decided by three seconds total. Nathan Martin (45:17) and Afewerki Zeru (45:23) led the next wave, while Sam Chelanga — at 40 years old — ran 46:39 to finish 12th, one of the more quietly impressive performances in the field.
