Ninety-seven women lined up in F60-64 on a muggy Sunday morning in Utica — 75°F, 90% humidity, barely a breath of wind — and Kathy Hayden of Skaneateles, NY, made it look cleaner than conditions had any right to allow. She crossed in 1:12:50 at a 7:49/mi clip, a margin of more than two minutes over the field. Her race unfolded with steady authority: she moved from 178th among women at the 5K to 151st at 10K, and ultimately 149th at the finish, posting the 139th-fastest women's split on the 5K-to-10K segment to keep building her lead through the meat of the race.

Judy Andrew Piel of Nepean, ON, was the closest challenger, running a composed 1:14:54 (8:02/mi) for second. She climbed steadily through the women's field — 201st at 5K, 196th at 10K, 191st at the finish — and her 193rd-fastest women's split on the back half showed she was still pressing when others were fading in the heat.

Third and fourth were the race's most compelling subplot. Lisa Butler (Granville Summit, PA) finished 3rd in 1:17:32, and Mary Swan (Marietta, NY) came in 4th at 1:17:57 — just 25 seconds apart after more than 9 miles.
