Barks & Brews 5K: Jayden Villa leads a strong M13-15 showing

• A wide spread defined the back half of the field — 6th-place Connor Soluri finished in 21:45, more than two and a half minutes behind 5th.

Thirteen boys lined up for the M13-15 race on a clear Sacramento morning — 73°F, a light 7 mph breeze, and the kind of conditions that reward anyone willing to push early. Jayden Villa did exactly that. The 14-year-old from Sacramento set the pace and held it, running 5:41 per mile to win in 17:40. His second half was sharp too, posting the 9th-fastest split among men on the 1M-to-finish stretch — a sign he wasn't just surviving the back end, he was still racing it.

Dane Demille, a 13-year-old from Elk Grove, was the closest challenger, finishing in 17:52 and recording the 12th-fastest men's split on that same closing stretch. At 5:45/mi, Demille was the fastest 13-year-old in the group and made Villa work for the win. Christian Mccabe (3rd, 18:50) and Apollo Rivera (4th, 19:02) rounded out a tight middle pack, with Rivera notably slipping from 11th to 19th among men on the final stretch — suggesting he spent something getting to the mile mark. Desmond Kwong (5th, 19:09) actually gained a place in the men's field over that closing segment, the only top-five finisher to do so.

Behind the top five, the field spread out considerably. Connor Soluri (6th, 21:45) and Samuel Ponder (7th, 23:07) kept solid paces, while the final six finishers ranged from 35 minutes to over an hour — a reminder that in M13-15, just showing up and finishing a 5K is its own achievement. Villa's win, though, was the story: clean, controlled, and fast enough to be proud of in any conditions.
