M20-24 at the B.A.A. 10K: Gebresilase Runs Away With It

• Haftamu Gebresilase, 21, won the M20-24 age group in 28:35 — a 4:36/mi average that left the field nearly four minutes behind on a 93°F morning in Boston.
• The gap at the top was enormous: runner-up Ben Burgess finished in 32:23, a margin of 3:48 over Gebresilase.
• Tight battle for 2nd and 3rd: Burgess (32:23) and Paulino Guevara Mateo (32:25) were separated by just two seconds, with Guevara Mateo posting one of the stronger closing segments — the 23rd-fastest split on the 8K-to-finish stretch in the men's field.
• Joey Hendershot rounded out the podium in 4th at 32:52, just 29 seconds behind Guevara Mateo, making the 2nd-through-4th spread a tight 29 seconds across three runners.

Haftamu Gebresilase turned the M20-24 race into a solo time trial from the gun. Running at 4:36 per mile through 93-degree heat, the 21-year-old was never seriously threatened, and his movement through the men's field tells the story — he was among the fastest men on the course through the 5K-to-8K segment, posting the 6th-fastest split in the men's field on that stretch. By the finish, he had simply run a different race than everyone else in his age group.

Behind him, the real drama played out between Burgess, Guevara Mateo, and Hendershot. Burgess held his position with remarkable consistency, sitting in the same spot in the men's field from the 5K checkpoint all the way to the line. Guevara Mateo, meanwhile, was moving — he climbed from 31st among men at the midpoint to 29th by the finish, his late surge reflected in that 23rd-fastest closing split. Hendershot (32:52) couldn't quite match that kick and settled 27 seconds back of Guevara Mateo in 4th.

Further down the age group, Lucas Sarantos (35:06) and Adrian Seeger (35:52) separated themselves from the chasing pack, with a gap of more than a minute opening between Seeger and 7th-place Luke Gomes (36:13). In a field of 282 finishers on a brutally hot Boston morning, every second earned was a genuine fight — but none more so than the two-second photo between 2nd and 3rd.
