Men's Half Marathon: Mueller Makes His Move

The story of the men's race was written in the second half. Samuel Mueller was buried in the pack at the mile mark — 56th among men — but was already moving. By 10K he had climbed to 3rd, and over the final stretch he turned up the heat with the 4th-fastest closing split in the field to take the win in 1:13:49 at 5:38/mi. It was a patient, calculated race that became something more aggressive right when it mattered.

Ricardo Jazo tracked a similar early trajectory, sitting 57th at the mile before rocketing to 2nd by 10K — aided by the 3rd-fastest 1M-to-10K split among the men — and he held that position all the way to the line in 1:14:14. Kyle Cripps ran the 6th-fastest middle split to climb from 62nd to 5th by 10K, then closed out in 1:14:45 for 3rd. The gap between Jazo and Cripps was 31 seconds; between Mueller and Jazo, just 25. The podium was decided by who surged earliest and hardest.

Jose Mosqueda (5th, 1:16:25) and Benjamin Reyes (4th, 1:15:19) added intrigue behind the podium. Mosqueda was quick in the middle miles — 4th-fastest on that 1M-to-10K stretch — but Reyes, the youngest of the top five at 22, answered with the 3rd-fastest closing split to leapfrog him for 4th. Steven Lancaster (6th, 1:17:01) and Michael Gonzalez (7th, 1:18:21) rounded out a tight top seven before the gaps began to widen. In the 74°F Fresno heat, Delfino Arevalo's 1:18:43 at age 43 stood as one of the quieter feats of the morning.
