Judy McCoy, 71, from Laguna Niguel made the trip to Fresno pay off in the most dramatic fashion possible. She and Adrienne Bachman, 72, ran what amounted to an identical race — same average pace, nearly mirrored gender placements at every checkpoint — and yet when the timing mats had their final say, McCoy had three seconds on her rival. Both women closed the final stretch from 10K to the finish with nearly matched efforts, McCoy posting the 652nd-fastest women's split on that segment, Bachman the 653rd. In a field of hundreds, they were shoulder to shoulder to the end.

Behind that duel, Kim Ross and Theiry Ramirez — both 70, both from the Fresno area — waged their own battle for third. Ramirez had the more striking early move, sitting in 415th among all women through the opening mile, a position that suggested a fast start. But the middle segment told a different story: she slipped back to 694th by 10K, and Ross, who had been more conservative early, was right there with her. Ross ultimately edged her by 18 seconds, 3:28:07 to 3:28:25, to claim third in the F70-74 group.

Gail Vaughan, 71, of Clovis rounded out the group in 3:45:41, running a steady 17:13/mi and actually gaining ground among the women's field in the final stretch — moving from 734th to 725th after 10K. In warm November conditions at 74°F, five women in their seventies finished a half marathon. That's the headline underneath the headline.
