Shamrock 8K Non-Binary: Anishchenko dominates from wire to wire

• Nikita Anishchenko won in 39:53 (8:01/mi), holding 1st place from start to finish and posting the fastest split on the 2M→4M segment.
• Katharyn Dembowski crossed 2nd in 1:00:33 — a remarkable weekend double, having also finished 2nd in the Half Marathon.
• Lucas Cheuvront, 20, took 3rd in 1:06:46, while Julia Hanes, 44, finished 4th in 1:19:13 — herself completing a double after placing 4th in the Half Marathon.
• Seven non-binary athletes finished the 8K, with nearly an 18-minute spread separating 3rd from 7th.

Nikita Anishchenko, 31, of Henrico, VA, made this race look like a training run. Running 8:01/mi through the Virginia Beach morning, Anishchenko sat in 1st from the opening mile, never relinquished it, and punctuated the performance with the fastest non-binary split on the 2M→4M stretch. The 39:53 finish left the rest of the field well in arrears — Dembowski in 2nd was over 20 minutes back.

That 2nd-place finish belongs to Katharyn Dembowski, and it's the kind of result that deserves its own paragraph. Racing the Shamrock Half Marathon earlier in the weekend and finishing 2nd there, Dembowski came back for the 8K and crossed in 1:00:33 (12:11/mi), also posting the 3rd-fastest split on the 2M→4M segment. Backing up a half marathon podium with another podium in the 8K is a serious feat, and Dembowski earned every bit of it.

Lucas Cheuvront, 20, of Newport News, rounded out the podium in 1:06:46 (13:26/mi), holding 3rd from early on and adding the 4th-fastest mid-race split. Julia Hanes, 44, of Glenside, PA, finished 4th in 1:19:13 — and like Dembowski, she was pulling double duty, having placed 4th in the Half Marathon as well. Two athletes racing across multiple Shamrock events and podium-ing in both is one of the better stories of the weekend.

Jacob Ball (1:14:24) and Ray Irish (1:34:58) rounded out the middle of the field in 6th and 5th respectively, while Emily Caraballo, 34, of Virginia Beach, closed out the group in 1:57:01 — a finish that required pushing through the full 8K on a breezy, humid March morning.
