Shamrock 8K M45-49: Angell dominates in Blue Ridge

• Sparacino's middle surge produced the 16th-fastest 2M→4M split among men; Warren's 38th-fastest on that same stretch meant Sparacino caught and nearly passed him late.
• Curtis Straub (5th, 32:50) closed with the 32nd-fastest 4M→Finish split among men, holding off Patrick Donohue (6th, 32:58) and Brent Nieter (7th, 33:02) by a combined 12 seconds.

David Angell, 49, from Blue Ridge, VA, made this one look almost unfair. His 26:27 — a 5:19/mi clip — was in a different race from everyone else in M45-49. Todd Musher (2nd, 29:38, 5:58/mi) ran a genuinely strong effort, but Angell had already built an insurmountable lead well before the finish. The gap between 1st and 2nd was 3:11 — larger than the gap between 2nd and 10th.

The real drama played out behind Musher, in the fight for the final podium spot. Matt Sparacino (3rd) and David Warren (4th) crossed in 32:00 and 31:59 respectively — a one-second finish that tells only half the story. Warren ran the stronger early race, sitting 21st among men at the 2M mark while Sparacino was back in 60th. But Sparacino's 2M→4M split was the 16th-fastest among men in that stretch, compared to Warren's 38th-fastest. That's a genuine catch-up — Sparacino closing hard while Warren faded just enough. Warren's 31:59 edged him to 4th by the slimmest of margins, but Sparacino's late charge made it a race.

From there, the top ten filled out steadily. Carter Eggleston (8th, 33:24) and Richard Crouch (9th, 33:56) kept the pace honest through the back of the top ten, while Mark Manny (10th, 34:32) rounded out a group of finishers all within eight minutes of each other. Further back, the field spread across a wide range of efforts — Travis Turner (12th, 35:13) and Kevin Tarpley Jr (14th, 36:38) both navigated the Virginia Beach course under 7:30/mi, with 240 more finishers completing the M45-49 picture on a cool, breezy morning.
